What we are working on in class and how you can help! Week of 9-18

Below is what we are covering this coming up week, and how can you help at home (look for this symbol @). Math- In math, we will continue to work on addition, subtraction, and ordering size in math. @ Please continue to work on place value at home (example- the number 92 the "place" of the 9 is in the tens place, the amount "value" is 90 or 9 tens). Play Sparkle! They love it and should be able to tell you how to play! Or practice counting forwards and backwards in the car, 'start at 51 stop at 73'. Make sure they don't start before or go past the numbers given. Also, practice math facts as much as possible! They should be fluent with problems to 5 (ex. 1+3=4, 2+3=5). Social Studies- They will continue to work on goods, services, needs, wants, and scarcity. @ Now is a perfect time to talk about these concepts because they have great real world connections with the issues created in Texas and Florida by the hurricanes. We will also discuss where we live including our city, state, county, continent, country, and address. Your child will need to know all of the continents and oceans as well. This is a year long standard so we will keep practicing! Science- This week we will start making projects with Mrs. Cable in the library. They will be making real world weather and continent connections. They will have to use already taught standards about weather, and apply it to the project and while doing so they will learn about other areas of the worlds weather. Phonics- We will be working on final consonant blends -nd,

-ng, -nk, and -nt. They are understanding how the consonant sounds blend together at the end of words. @ You can have extra practice at home by going on words hunts in books or items around the house. (for example: ring, hand, ant; discuss how it is like they hear one sound at the end.) Reading- In reading, we have been focusing on sequencing which are the beginning, middle, end of stories. We are also revisiting characters and setting. @ At home when they have read their books choose one to have them either tell you what happened in the beginning, middle, and end. You can also have them share about the characters, setting, problem, and solution. Writing- In writing, we are still working on narrative writing. This is writing small moments stories about yourself. @ At home encourage them to recount their day including lots of details about what happened. (For example: "You had a good day! That is great! What made it great? What happened?")
